Distorted Blur
Exploring the power of distorted blur in AI prompts. I check how different types of blur, Gaussian, Motion Blur and Distorted Blur, create dreamlike, cinematic visuals.
tl;dr
- Blur adds a moody look – dreamy, surreal, or dramatic, depending on the type
- Distorted Blur in AI prompts creates a more abstract, painterly effect
- The prompt works works really well with the in black & white or with added grain
What is Blur and how can we utilize it?
Blur is one of those things that feels simple – until you start experimenting with it. It’s not just about making things out of focus. It directs our attention, creates atmosphere, and movement. In photography and design, blur can be intentional or accidental. A shallow depth of field pulls focus toward a subject, motion blur adds energy, and Gaussian blur softens harsh edges.
Lately, I’ve noticed more distorted blur effects creeping into visual trends – images that feel stretched, warped, and surreal. So I wanted to give it a go in Midjourney.
My Explorations with Blur
Scrolling Instagram, I see more and more blur effects, either captured in-camera or added in post. Naturally, I wanted to see how well AI could recreate this aesthetic.
The first thing I tested was Gaussian blur. I quickly realized that Midjourney doesn’t really distinguish between different types of blur – so even when I prompted for Gaussian blur, the results also included Motion Blur.

So that is where I continued. Motion blur has a more edgy, kinetic feel, which I absolutely adore. I can see this style being used tastefully in editorial projects or as part of a modern lifestyle brand’s aesthetic – something dynamic, slightly abstract, yet still polished.

Left: Grainy photograph, distorted motion blur, subject: close up of young woman face | Middle: Photograph, distorted blur, studio light subject: jewelry on male hand | Right: Photograph, distorted motion blur, studio light subject: necklace woman
But I wanted even more distortion and blurriness – something that feels less controlled, more abstract. That’s when I landed on distorted blur, where shapes melt and stretch, creating an almost painterly, dreamlike effect. I also added grain and decided to go in a more black-and-white direction.

Left: Grainy black-and-white photograph, distorted blur subject: still life of a single flower | Middle: A grainy black-and-white photograph with a distorted motion blur effect, subject: shadowed face of an old man in dark, blurry and out of focus | Right: Grainy black-and-white photograph, distorted blur subject: tropical landscape with old ruins
In the end, my favorite prompt addition was distorted blur. It captured exactly what I was looking for –the surreal, high-fashion, slightly nostalgic aesthetic that has been showing up more and more in digital art and photography.
